The Power of Picking Up the Phone: Why It Still Matters: The Ninth Success Principle - It's Worth Your Wage

Introduction: The Enduring Importance of the Telephone

In the fast-paced world of digital communication, innovations like the internet have redefined how we connect. However, amidst these advancements, the telephone remains one of the most powerful tools for personal interaction. From smoke signals to the modern smartphone, the evolution of communication has brought people closer. Yet, nothing beats the personal touch that a phone call provides.

The Unique Value of a Phone Call in a Digital World

While text messages, emails, and social media allow us to communicate quickly, they often lack the warmth and intimacy of a phone call. Whether it’s a traditional landline or the latest smartphone, the phone offers an unmatched advantage: human connection. In a world dominated by instant messaging, picking up the phone can make all the difference.

Personal Story: How a Phone Call Changed Everything

In 1994, after returning from military service and relocating to Louisiana, I faced the challenge of re-entering civilian life. I was overwhelmed by the cultural shift and the differences between the military environment and the civilian job market. The Air Force had prepared me with transitional training, including resume writing and interview skills, but finding a job proved difficult.

Door-to-Door Job Search: The Struggles of Pre-Digital Era Job Hunting

Armed with resumes, newspaper job listings, and a determined mindset, my wife and I began our job search. We went door-to-door, meeting employers in person and sometimes even interviewing on the spot. This was before the era of online applications, and face-to-face interaction was essential. Despite numerous interviews, success seemed elusive.

A Breakthrough: The Power of the Phone Call

Success didn’t come until I decided to pick up the phone. With no formal sales training but plenty of drive, I began cold-calling companies from the Yellow Pages. One call, in particular, changed everything. I reached the president of a small company who happened to be a fellow veteran. Our shared background helped establish an immediate connection, and he offered me a job—starting with a temporary agency.

The Lasting Power of the Telephone in Professional Networking

This pivotal moment highlights the unique ability of the telephone to foster connections. The personal touch of a phone call opens doors that emails or texts often cannot. Whether you’re job hunting, networking, or simply trying to connect with someone, the telephone remains an invaluable tool in both personal and professional settings.

Conclusion: The Phone Call Still Holds Power

In today’s digital world, where text-based communication dominates, never underestimate the impact of picking up the phone. A phone call can be the key to opening new doors, creating meaningful connections, and making lasting impressions. So, next time you need to reach out, remember; it’s worth your wage.

I've Seen Wonders: Reflections on Life's Moments

#42 1/22/2025 I've Seen Wonders: Reflections on Life's Moments Introduction: Life is a tapestry woven with experiences, each moment a thread that adds depth and color. Recently, I found myself reflecting on the extraordinary and everyday sights that have shaped my journey. Inspired by a rare snowfall in Louisiana, I wrote a poem titled "I've Seen," capturing snapshots of my life. In this blog, I break down each part of the poem, sharing the stories and emotions behind these moments. I've Seen I've seen volcanoes at rest, Their mighty peaks in calmest jest, From the Philippines to Italy, Their silent strength humbling me. I've seen dolphins on a Guam sunset, swim in sync, A fleeting dance at twilight's brink. I've seen the wintry days of Delaware accumulate ice and snow, A frozen world where whispers grow. I've seen the Statue of Liberty with her torch held high, A beacon of hope against the sky. I've seen the Vietnam Wall, so solemn and...

From Fear to Freedom: How Talking to Your Fears Can Change Your Life

#43 - 2/16/2025 From Fear to Freedom: How Talking to Your Fears Can Change Your Life Several years ago, I discovered that a simple but intense fear would overtake me every time I was making a left turn or driving along a two-lane highway. It wasn’t just any fear—it was the fear of encountering a Semi 18-wheeler coming from the opposite direction. It’s a fear that still lingers today, though I’ve found a way to manage it, and in doing so, I’ve transformed my relationship with fear in general. At first, it seemed completely irrational. Why should the presence of an 18-wheeler, a vehicle designed for long-haul travel, trigger a visceral reaction of anxiety in me? After all, I knew I was a capable driver, and the truck was just a vehicle like mine—only much larger. But no amount of logic could stop my body’s automatic response. The tightening chest, the rush of adrenaline, and the internal voice telling me to be careful—every time, without fail. But then I was given a tip that would ...
